Cultural Inclusion

Importance of Reading

We want all children to become highly skilled readers, working at or above the National Standard, who develop a life-long love of reading during their time with us. At Rowdha International Academy, we understand that reading fluently is essential for students to engage fully with our diverse curriculum. It is crucial for them to become confident readers, as this skill enhances their ability to communicate effectively both in school and beyond. By encouraging students to read frequently and across various genres, we help them develop their literacy skills in both written and spoken forms. Below, we outline our comprehensive reading initiatives.

Reading for pleasure in English

Key Stage 3 students have a weekly 'Reading for Pleasure' lesson where they read with their English teacher, developing skills to understand complex texts. The curriculum includes a range of literary and non-fiction works, exposing students to diverse genres, cultures, and historical contexts. These sessions support the English curriculum and build a strong foundation for Key Stage 4, connecting with subjects like history.

Reading Interventions

At Rowdha International Academy, we support students who need help building reading confidence through early assessments and targeted interventions. We identify those who may struggle using standardized tests and provide support, including small reading groups and the SRA program, to help improve comprehension and reach age-appropriate reading levels.

Lesson Booklets

We've recently enhanced our educational resources by introducing lesson booklets across all subjects. These booklets present new learning concepts and include challenging texts, helping students build the skills and confidence needed to succeed across the curriculum.
